Somnambulism (Sleep walking) most often occurs during deep non-REM sleep (stage 3 or stage 4 sleep) early in the night. It can occur during REM sleep near morning. For some, the episodes of sleepwalking occur less than once per month and do not result in injury to the patient or others.
Somnambulism or sleep walking is a disorder of arousal which is classified as parasomnia. It is defined as abnormal movements or behaviours that intrude into sleep intermittently or episodically during the night (Ackroyd G. et al, 2007). It can be a primary phenomena or secondary to systemic disease.

Sleepwalking episodes vary widely in their form and strength, from subclinical events to ambulation, and to most severe examples where even sleep-related violence and life-threatening injuries occur. Somnambulism is a non-rapid eye movement sleep parasomnia with potential for significant injury as well as functional nighttime and daytime impairment. Clonazepam is frequently used as first line pharmacotherapy. However, the optimal treatment of somnambulism has not been established.

PMID: 5584130 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE] Night terrors and somnambulism (NTS) are defined as disorders of arousal occurring in children during Stage 3 to 4 of NREM (non-rapid eye movement) sleep. In this study, the interictal EEG recordings in 35 neurologically normal children with clinical NTS were studied. Early studies found that electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings during somnambulistic episodes were characterized by a combination of alpha, theta, and delta frequencies, without evidence of clear wakefulness.

Engelsk definition Homicidal sleepwalking, also known as homicidal somnambulism or sleepwalking murder, is the act of killing someone during an episode of sleepwalking. There have been some cases in which an act of homicide has occurred and the prime suspect may have committed the act while sleepwalking. The veracity of recorded cases is disputed. Using special techniques allowing for subject mobility, we obtained continuous electroencephalographic recordings of known sleepwalkers. Somnambulistic incidents occurred during periods of slow-wave sleep. The incidents were not related temporally to dream periods, nor did they affect the total time or the percentage of time spent dreaming during the nights on which the subjects were studied.
